Family History

In 1950 Thomas William Bowler started the transport company that bears his name in Offerton, near Stockport, Greater Manchester. Transport and agriculture came together at Shady Oak Farm by transferring cattle to its slaughterhouse in New Mills, Derbyshire. After the abattoir was sold off, the transport side petered out and Thomas’s son John Bowler Snr concentrated on farming.

Transport was reintroduced in 1989 by John Snr’s son Nick, while his wife and business partner Lyndsey ran the horse riding equipment and animal feed shop at the farm and the head office of TW Bowler Group.

More interested in equipment than farming, Nick started carrying out repairs, and buying and selling plant, machinery and vehicles, as well as moving the equipment for himself and his customers.

It was his hands-on approach that influenced John. “My dad would go and buy something and occasionally it didn’t work but he still had to get it on the truck to get home,” he says. “He’d go fully prepared and we continue to follow that example today. His advice to employees facing a problem is “you’ll do something…”

“We always service the vehicles before a job to reduce the chances of a mechanical failure and always go over-prepared because you never really know what challenges you will face.”

After leaving school, John started an apprenticeship as an HGV technician with Scania dealer West Pennine Trucks. After any shift he would usually be found in the company yard, so it was no surprise that he joined the family business full-time in 2011 once he was fully qualified.
His sister Sam also joined, helping with the administration, and went full time in 2012. “I’ve got my Class 1,” she says, “so I can drive when the drivers run out of time, which has included moving an 80-tonne load.”

The company employs 30 people, with 25 at the Bredbury yard, and the rest at the head office and shop at Shady Oak Farm in Offerton.
