Transporting large items, like wind turbines, from location to location is hard work; trust us. However, how much harder must it have been for civilisations and industrialists of the past to transport huge materials from place to place? Here, we take a more detailed look at how people from the past have managed to transport heavy haulage from place to place. Read on to find out more.
Stonehenge: An Ancient Heavy Haulage Project
Stonehenge is one of the most iconic structures in any corner of the world. As well as being instantly recognisable, it’s also shrouded in mystery, with no one knowing exactly what its purpose was. However, studies of the rocks indicate that they came from many miles away from the Salisbury site. The sarsen stones – which can weigh up to 30 tonnes each – come from Marlborough Downs which is 20 miles north of Stonehenge. This might not seem like a long way for us, but transporting these gargantuan stones would have required a herculean effort by the builders.
Even more impressively, the smaller ‘bluestones’ used in Stonehenge were brought from an area of East Wales more than 250 kilometres from the Stonehenge site. How exactly they transported the stones remains a mystery, but they were likely hauled across land and waterway routes.
The Pyramids
The building of the Great Pyramids of Giza also required huge human effort to transport gargantuan stone bricks for construction. Although exactly how the Egyptians transported huge slabs of stone across the desert to their destination was a complete mystery, historians now suggest that they know the technique which was used.
Egyptians had to transport these rocks across the sane for many miles to reach the Cairo destination of the pyramids. They did this using huge sledges to carry the rocks and wetting the sand in front of them to ease the transportation.
