Moving house is certainly not a process many of us will love, and understandably so. Planning to move all of your items from one place to another is highly time-consuming and pretty drawn out. You can’t underestimate the sheer physical and mental organisation and planning it involves. Packing up some boxes is one part of it but moving them out of your home and into a van from one location to another can be very time-consuming.
Using the services of an experienced firm to help with your transport is an obvious and necessary measure to assist you in upping sticks; taking the burden off of you so you can focus on arranging the rest of the move. However, there are still a couple of formalities for you need to take care of beforehand and to make sure you’ve tied up those loose ends and minimised any additional hassle to make the process of moving from A to B as simple as possible.
Do your research:
It’s recommended you get at least three quotes so you can thoroughly compare prices and consider all your options; although your first instinct may be to go for the lowest price removals firm, if they are seeking a significantly lower price you will have to consider the quality of the service and perhaps take into consideration and what the service or experience they are offering is. It’s also wise to read a couple of reviews if you are able to and seek some unbiased feedback. By doing this you can feel calm that you’re going to receive a good service – one less thing for you to worry about.
Get yourself insured:
The very last thing you’ll want when moving is any sentimental things or personal possessions getting broken or going missing. In the instance of this actually happening, which is very unlikely, it’s a good idea to get yourself some removal insurance. The majority of removal companies will offer you with committed moving insurance, but make sure this is the case before relocating. Having insurance is also the sign of a reliable firm that takes pride in professionalism.
Arrange for the council to pick up or get rid of non-essential items:
It goes without saying that you’ll want to keep everything you’ll be transporting to your new home to the absolute minimum. If you want to cut your losses, you may need to arrange for surplus furniture or unnecessary items to be picked up, donated or sold. If you plan to arrange for a council collection this could come at a charge, depending on the types of items you’re keen to discard. If you don’t properly dispose of your unwanted furniture or possessions you could be subject to fines. Another possible option is selling your unwanted items on sites such as Gumtree or donating to local charity shops or a reclamation yard.
Have a moving day survival kit:
The small things you can plan in advance prior to the day of your move to alleviate stress is definitely a good idea. When the big day finally comes, you may not be able to conveniently pop to the shops for any essentials! This is why it’s a great idea to make up a pack of necessary items to get you through the day or tide you over in your new home. You might want to include in your pack: bottled water, a kettle, tea, coffee, UHT milk, snacks, cutlery, and paper plates.
Clear out your belongings When you’re moving home, the last thing you want to do is pay to move items that you end up throwing away once you’re in the new place. Have a good sort out at least two weeks prior to the move. Be sure you clear items from everywhere – the loft, under the stairs, spare rooms, outbuildings and the garden. It can come as a big shock to discover just how many hidden things there are and how many things you have accumulated over the years.
Think about where your furniture will be going
Imagine your new home and think about how and whether you actually will use your current furniture in it. The previous homeowner should have provided you with the necessary information detailing the dimensions of every room, so you can figure out what will fit and what there is no room for. If it won’t fit, sell it, give it away or take it to the dump straight away. It’s a good idea to pay your new home a visit before completion so that you can double-check measurements and see for yourself whether there’s room for your curtains, furniture and so on. The sooner you start this, the longer you’ll have to attempt to sell unwanted belongings for at a fair price, rather than being forced to give valuable items away because you’re desperate to get rid of them prior to moving day.
Assess your valuables and breakables
While lots of your belongings will go straight into boxes, you’ll need to take extra care over any items that are breakable. It’s worth packing these things up, separately from the rest of your items. Wrap up anything which may break in bubble wrap or newspaper, then label these boxes as fragile. If you can, transport these items in your vehicle, rather than in the removals van. This also holds true for anything that’s valuable. The removal company’s insurance might not cover you for items above a certain value.
Start packing your boxes
There are simple things you can do to make packing and moving and unpacking so much simpler for yourself. Get yourself quality packing materials, including boxes, bubble wrap and tissue paper. Put layers of crumpled paper or protective material between each item to prevent scratching don’t overpack your boxes, spread heavy items out between your boxes and write on each box what the contents are and indicate which is the right way up.
If this sounds a bit too much, getting your removals company to pack your belongings for you can add surprisingly little to the cost of your move. Not only will it indicate that your items are insured against breakage. It often takes half a day and two days to pack your items, depending on how much stuff you own.
Notify companies of your move
Before you move house, you’ll need to let your utility providers know that you’re moving address – as well as all other necessary contacts such as your bank, insurers, GP and a host of other organisations.
